I miss the days where two people could agree to disagree, change the topic to an area of neutral alliance, and later part as friends, or at least distant cousins who see each other at funerals and weddings–a civil framework where disagreement does not have to be disagreeable. That does not appear to be the norm anymore, and I don’t know if I am more sad than mad, OR if I am gradually coming to understand something very important about the world I now apparently inhabit.

In my work, “normal” can be the enemy of acceptance. I work with the lost and hurting–those terrified by the prospect of change and NO change and are caught somewhere in the middle, by the exit marked “NORMAL” (better known as the opposite of what I am experiencing right now).

Is “age” simply a number, or is there more to consider as we “age?” That’s perhaps a clue to the answer to my question. Consider this: for all its small stature and breadth, AGE is a complex word with many uses and assumptions to its appearance in the lexicon. It cannot confine or define the entire story, for it is but an instant amidst all others in a life refined by each coming moment.
